WHAT THE F*CK IS
PELVIC FLOOR PT?
Let’s talk about the muscles nobody really taught you about.
Peeing when you sneeze? Pain with sex? Constipation that feels like a full-time job? Or maybe someone mentioned pelvic floor physical therapy and your first thought was, “Wait… physical therapy for WHAT?” Fair question.
Pelvic floor physical therapy is exactly what it sounds like: physical therapy for the muscles and structures in and around your pelvis. And just like the rest of your body, those muscles can experience challenges with strength, mobility, coordination, and relaxation.
THE GOOD NEWS? THERE’S A LOT MORE TO PELVIC PT THAN Kegels and awkward
conversations.
01 · FIRST THINGS FIRST:
YOU HAVE A pelvic
floor.
Yep. You. Everyone does.
Your pelvic floor is a group of muscles at the bottom of your pelvis that helps support your pelvic organs and contributes to bladder control, bowel movements, sexual function, and managing pressure when you move.
And here’s the thing: these are muscles. They need to contract, relax, lengthen, and coordinate, just like the muscles in your shoulder or hip.
Pelvic floor PT isn’t just for people who’ve had babies, and you don’t need to be leaking urine to benefit from it.

WAIT, PELVIC PT CAN HELP WITH

AND YES, OTHER THINGS TOO
Not every symptom starts with the pelvic floor. That’s why we assess rather than assume, and collaborate with other healthcare providers when appropriate.
03
WHAT ACTUALLY HAPPENS AT pelvic floor physical therapy?
Spoiler: We don’t just jump straight into an internal exam.
Your first appointment is about understanding you, your symptoms, and what you’re hoping to change.
01
FIRST, WE TALK.
What’s going on? When did it start? What makes it better or worse? What have you tried? And most importantly, what would make today a productive session for you?
02
THEN, WE ASSESS.
Depending on your concerns, we might look at how you breathe, squat, move, or use certain muscles. Your pelvic floor doesn’t work in isolation, so sometimes looking beyond the pelvis gives us useful information.
03
WE MAY ASSESS THE PELVIC FLOOR DIRECTLY.
An external or internal pelvic floor examination can help us better understand muscle function, coordination, tenderness, and relaxation.
BUT HERE’S THE IMPORTANT PART:
AN INTERNAL EXAM IS always
optional.
We’ll explain what we’re assessing and why,
ask for your consent,
and respect your decision if you’d rather skip it.
You can change your mind at any point.
04
FINALLY, WE MAKE A PLAN. TOGETHER.
We’ll discuss what we found, what might be contributing to your symptoms, and what treatment could look like moving forward. No one-size-fits-all exercise list. No assumptions about what your body needs.
04
Do I HAVE to have an internal exam?
+
NOPE.
An internal exam can provide valuable information, but it’s never a requirement to participate in pelvic floor PT. We can still evaluate and treat plenty of things without one. And if you’re wondering whether it’s the same as a gynecological exam, not quite. A pelvic PT exam focuses on how muscles and surrounding tissues function, rather than reproductive health screening.

Question 03
Question 04
Is pelvic floor PT just Kegels?
+
ABSOLUTELY NOT.
Kegels have their time and place, but they’re one tool in a much bigger toolbox. Think about it: would we give every person with back pain the exact same exercise? Your pelvic floor needs to do more than squeeze. It also needs to lengthen, relax, coordinate, and respond to the demands of everyday life. The goal isn’t to spend the rest of your life thinking about squeezing your pelvic floor every time you move.
Why are you looking at the rest of my body?
+
THE BIGGER PICTURE.
Your pelvic floor works with the rest of your body. Looking at breathing, hips, core, spine, and movement helps us understand what may be contributing to your symptoms.
OKAY, BUT I STILL HAVE questions.
05
Curious? Let’s talk about it.
CURIOUS?
Let’s talk about it.
Pelvic health doesn’t have to be mysterious, embarrassing, or something you just learn to live with.
Whether you’re dealing with a specific symptom, have questions about your body, or aren’t even sure pelvic PT is right for you, there’s room for that conversation.
UNDERSTAND YOUR BODY. MOVE WITH INTENTION.
